A Lifeguard at Johns Beach Saved a Drowning Child
At about 7:00 p.m. July 8, the lifeguard Miss Rose was still on duty at Johns Beach. Suddenly she heard a cry from the sea. When she caught sight of a drowning boy struggling in the water and crying for help, she immediately took up a life-buoy tied with a rope and threw it over to the drowning boy. The boy got hold of it and did his best to swim towards the beach, where Miss Rose was going all out to pull the child out of the water. At last the child was saved.
The child shook the lifeguard’s hand, saying, “It’s very kind of you to save me. If it were not for you, I would have been drowned. Thank you very much. ”Miss Rose got easy and smiled, saying, “It’s my duty to care for each child, but in the future do not go any farther away when swimming.”

Dear Steve,
I'm so pleased to learn that you and your classmates are learning Chinese. I'd like to recommend the following two dictionaries. The English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary is really a good one for beginners. It has 18 000 English words and 20 000 Chinese words. Besides plenty of examples, it has many notes telling you how to use a word. Xinhua Dictionary is the most popular Chinese dictionary, and it has a vocabulary of 10 000 words. It may also be useful to some advanced learners of Chinese. Of the two, ECCED is more expensive, costing 52 yuan, and XD costs 11 yuan.
Please let me know if you want me to buy these dictionaries.
Yours,
Li rue

3. 你對此的看法及理由
【范文】
Do We Need “Never give up”?
It is widely accepted that “Never give up”, a strong and positive life attitude, is the key for individual success on the grounds that permanent persistence may boost our confidence, strengthen our will, and provide us a second chance for success when we are in hardship. However, others argue that sensible abandonment is more precious than blind persistence because the wise one should choose the most suitable area for himself/herself.
In my opinion, we need to learn to give up timely. The most immediate reason is that we should adjust our aim carefully in order to go ahead continuously. Sometimes, to give up those unrealistic targets is essential for success. Besides, the attitude “Never give up” exhausts us both mentally and physically. Only through learning to give up can we lead a pleasant and relaxing life. Finally, the temporary comprise means a new start, a beginning bringing new hopes, expectations and opportunities for us.
Passive as giving up sounds alike, it represents a more mature and realistic mentality. If those opposing this attitude can take into consideration of its benefits, then this may seem acceptable in our lives.
英語作文 篇8
Hope is HealthyYou are about to go to the hospital for a routine surgical procedure. Which attitude
You are about to go to the hospital for a routine surgical procedure. Which attitude is healthier?
A. Id better find out everything I can about this operation you can never know too much.
B. Dont tell me the details. Its going to be fine.
Answer B is supposed to be the wrong one. Its an example of what psychologists call denial, a defence mechanism that minimizes uncomfortable information. Denial, they have argued, is stupid, self-defeating and ultimately dangerous.
But research is showing that answer B is a faster route to recovery. Denial of a certain sort and at certain times can be healthy. Of course, you do need to pay attention to some unpleasant facts. The trick is to know when its helpful to worry and when its counterproductive.
Out-and-out denial may be the best approach to surgery, according to Richard S. Lazarus, professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. With Frances Cohen, Lazarus studied 61 patients about to undergo operations . In general, patients followed one of two mental strategies; avoidance or vigilance.
Typically, avoiders had not discussed their surgery in detail with anyone, didnt want to know about it and didnt dwell upon its risks.
