英語一直是我最頭痛的一門功課。因為在我看來有無數(shù)個毫無規(guī)律的英語單詞要背誦，還有那莫名其妙的聽力，都令我煩惱不已。但這學期我發(fā)現(xiàn)我似乎對這門討厭的功課產(chǎn)生了興趣。
事情的起因是爸爸出差到北京，給我?guī)Щ亓艘慌_讀書郎英語同步讀書機。我立刻被它漂亮的外表吸引住了，因為它像一臺高檔的筆記本電腦。打開讀書機，左邊是音標，分為元音、輔音；右邊是26個英語字母。最大的好處是它可以下載我上課用的PEP教材。媽媽讓我打開英語課本，翻到第1頁，把讀書機中的頁碼調(diào)至相同頁碼，我再用那神奇的信號筆一點，點到哪兒，讀書機就發(fā)出標準的讀音，點第二遍時它就譯出這個單詞的中文含義，真是太神奇了！
剛開始幾天，我每天一放學就抱著這臺讀書郎，漸漸地新鮮勁也就過去了。媽媽看準了時機，立即調(diào)動我的積極性，把老師當天教的英語單詞分批教我，并慢慢告訴我這個字母在單詞中所發(fā)的音。這樣，日積月累，慢慢地我對有些字母的發(fā)音規(guī)律也有所掌握。正像媽媽所說的那樣，一旦你會讀準這個單詞，那么這個單詞的一半已被記住，只要稍一用心，就可記住全部。媽媽告訴我：學習英語要循序漸進，因為記憶會衰減，所以學單詞時，先學一遍，過一會兒復習一遍，到第二天再復習一遍，一星期、一個月內(nèi)再次復習，這樣能把短期記憶變成長期記憶。這種方法叫作思馬德記憶。按照媽媽所說的.方法，我試了一下。哎，果真有效果！漸漸地我對背誦單詞有點竅門了。這個學期六個單元所要求的四會單詞，我全部做到了會聽、說、讀、寫。
因為背誦單詞有了明顯的進步，得到了老師的表揚，我的學習熱情倍增，對聽力也產(chǎn)生了興趣。現(xiàn)在我拿到聽力課文，不象以前那樣手忙腳亂，而是先把課文、圖案看一遍。如果是選擇題，我會看清圖案，了解這幾幅圖的大致含義，再聽錄音。我現(xiàn)在能抓住幾個重點詞語與圖案進行對照，基本能做到準確無誤。對閱讀也同樣，抓住幾個關鍵詞語和下面的問題進行對照。

每天清晨，我都會被爺爺那嘰哩呱啦的英語聲給吵醒。你肯定會疑惑不解，告訴你吧，我爺爺隨著奧運會的一天天臨近，竟然每天早上五點多鐘就開始學英語了。
爺爺常說："奧運會是我們中國人的驕傲。"到時肯定會有許多外國人來我們張家港觀光旅游。如果走在大街上老外問咱們問題，咱們聽不懂，也不知道怎么說，肯定會讓他們笑話的。于是，爺爺就去"歐亞"報了個老年英語培訓班。由于爺爺?shù)挠⒄Z基礎很差，學起來就特別的困難，再加上爺爺?shù)囊粋�門牙也掉了，發(fā)起音來更是費勁，而且還要鬧笑話。雖然有這么多困難，但是爺爺很堅持，天天抱著復讀機聽個不停，還樂此不疲。
為了把英語學好，爺爺要求我和他用英語互相問候和對話。比如：每天早上他看到我起床就說一聲："Goodmorning（早上好）！"下午放學回家就說："Goodafternoon（下午好）！"等簡單的句子。有一次，我給爺爺?shù)沽吮�，他連忙說："Thankyou（謝謝）！"結果說成了"坦克油"，把我逗的捧腹大笑，差點把剛喝的水給噴了出來。在一旁吃飯的老爸更是笑得前俯后仰。奶奶也一邊笑一邊拍打著爺爺說："老頭子，你都這么大年紀了，普通話都說不標準，還學英語呢，哈哈哈——"。爺爺故作鎮(zhèn)定的說："這有什么好笑的，不就是把音讀的重了一點嘛！"我連忙告訴爺爺說："爺爺，如果你把音讀重了，就有可能變成另外一個意思，那樣的話，外國人就有可能理解錯誤的。"爺爺聽了迫不及待的讓我教他，我耐心的一遍又一遍教他發(fā)音。雖然他的發(fā)音還是不怎么標準，可他堅持不懈的精神值得我們?nèi)胰速潎@。
爺爺身體不太好，還有糖尿病，醫(yī)生叮囑過爺爺要保證睡眠的充足，可爺爺為了學好英語，晚上仍然堅持去上老年英語培訓班。爸爸也曾勸他多休息，擔心過分的勞累會影響他的身體。但他堅定的對我們?nèi)胰苏f："為了北京的奧運，再大的困難也要堅持！"
在爺爺?shù)?不懈努力下，他的英語水平已有了一定的進步，基本的一些口語他都能比較流利的說出來。值得驕傲的是，在爺爺?shù)膸酉�，我們小區(qū)里的一些老年人都開始學起了英語，報上了老年英語培訓班。

Nowadays, it is not rare that celebrities from all works of life are employed as guest professors in universities. And we can always see reports about this in newspapers, magazines and other news media.
Some people see it as a win-win situation. On the one hand, celebrities can share their successful stories with students, which can broaden students’ horizon and inspire them to work harder. On the other hand, being visiting professors of universities, the celebrities can make themselves known to more people. However, other people disapprove this practice. They argue that universities’ attention of inviting celebrities to be professors is to enhance the schools’ fame instead of improving the quality of education, and some celebrities are not qualified to be professors.
In my view, just as a coin has two sides, the inviting of celebrities as guest professors has both good and bad effects. Thus I think colleges should evaluate the possible results thoroughly, and their choices should be based on the improvement of teaching standards and students’ development.

Nowadays we see supermodels on almost every magazine cover and one might wonder what life will be like being one of them. Such assumption may be painful for most of the magazine readers who are already over the age when they can get taller. In response to the ”Getting taller trend”, some goes so far as to pay doctors to cut their legs open and let surgeries do the job to get just two centimeters’ higher.
In spite of all these that are happening, some of my taller friends desire to give up this superiority for they just don’t want to be the center of the crowd, saying that they would kill to be a 4 feet child. Girls, maybe you can’t remember the time when you were younger and you need to jump really hard to catch a glimpse of up-the-table world? But being taller, even the upper world of the refrigerator top is no longer a myth and your mom and dad can’t hide your snacks up there any more! As time goes on, you can easily see on the table the beautiful lavenders or lilies stretching themselves in their own fragrant smell, the shining toaster popping out warm tasty toast, or the little drops of water glittering under bright sunshine after your mom wipes the table. Don’t you just love to see every phase of the moon even when they are not that high up in the sky?
Well, I do. Being a 5 ft 10 myself, I am also taking the advantage of buying a larger outfit at a same price. Also, I get a cleaner view of the blackboard even when sitting far away from it. I run faster, jump higher and can think positively. I am proud to say that I possess the ability to see the upside of almost everything. I guess it is because I am closer to the clear blue sky above our heads.
