      Less Pressure, Better Life

      Hello, boys and girls!

Pressure is a serious problem in today’s world. Students in our class are under too much pressure. Some students can’t get on well with their classmates, while others may worry about their exams.

I’m always under pressure, too. My parents want me to be the top student in class. So they send me to all kinds of after-classes at weekends. Last Monday evening, I had a talk with my mother. I told her I was not lazy. I really felt tired. I needed time to relax. My mother agreed with me at last. So I think a conversation with parents is necessary to solve the problem.

      That’s all. Thank you!

Directions: In this part, you are to write a composition of no less than 150 words about “College Graduates Work as Village Officials”. You should write according to the outline given below. Please remember to write it clearly on the ANSWER SHEET.

Some college graduates choose to work as village officials.

1、Do you think it is a good idea?

2、What can they offer the countryside?

3、What can they gain from their village positions?

College Graduates Work as Village Officials

There is no denying the fact that it is a hotly debated topic today how college graduates should choose their careers. Some time ago, it was reported that some college graduates chose to work as village officials. To this people’s attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view while others are against it. As far as I am concerned, I believe that it is a wise choice.

On the one hand, college graduates can contribute a lot to the development of the countryside. First, they can apply their professional knowledge there. Secondly, they can introduce new concepts to the countryside and speed the development of rural culture. As a result, the gap between the city and the countryside can well be bridged.

On the other hand, these graduates can benefit a lot from working as village officials. While too many college graduates are fighting for the handful of positions in big cities, these graduates can find themselves a wider stage of development and realize their value.

Therefore, college graduates working as village officials is a win-win choice and more graduates should be encouraged to work in the countryside.

with all her big brothers and sisters off to school, our ranch became a lonely place for our three-year-old daughter, becky。 she longed for playmates。 cattle and horses were too big to cuddle and farm machinery dangerous for a child so small。 we promised to buy her a puppy but in the meantime, “pretend” puppies popped up nearly every day。

i had just finished washing the lunch dishes when the screen door slammed and becky rushed in, cheeks flushed with excitement。 “mama!” she cried, “come see my new doggy! i gave him water two times already。 he’s so thirsty!”

      i sighed, another of becky’s imaginary dogs。

“please come, mama。” she tugged at my jeans, her brown eyes pleading, “he’s crying — and he can’t walk!”

“can’t walk?” now that was a twist。 all her previous make-believe dogs could do marvelous things。 one balanced a ball on the end of its nose。 another dug a hole that went all the way through the earth and fell out on a star on the other side。

still another danced on a tightrope。 why suddenly a dog that couldn’t walk?

“all right, honey,” i said。 by the time i tried to follow her, becky had already disappeared into the mesquite。

      “where are you?” i called。

“over here by the oak stump。 hurry, mama!”

      The Smell of Dirt

A lot of people love that fresh-dirt smell. The surprising thing, though, is that it isn’t coming from the dirt itself.

Microbiologists have traced the pleasant odor to an organic chemical called “ geosmin“.”

No way! But how does geosmin get into dirt?

A microbial geneticist named Keith Chater at the John Innes Center in England has traced geosmin down to a common bacterium called Streptomyces coelicolor.

He even found out exactly which gene in the little critters causes them to produce geosmin.

No way! A bacterium is producing the chemical that smells so good?

Interestingly enough, there are unconfirmed reports that animals are attracted to fresh dirt in the desert, and go there looking for water.

As they nose around the dirt, they pick up plenty of S. coelicolor,

which then hitch a ride from one oasis to the next.

If it’s true, then the bacteria in general may create the odor in order to attract animals.

The animals find water, the bacteria are spread, and everyone is happy.

The mother told a story to her child:

As we all know, the children have a very strong attachment to the balloon。 One day, a mother and son played in the park, the son hold a balloon; they sit to rest on the grass when they felt tired。 The mother took out a harmonica to play; the forest echoed melodious tweedle immediately。 The son stared his big eyes, ready to ask the mother the harmonica, but reluctant to discard balloons。 When he was in a dilemma, the mother stopped playing and smiled to him。 In just a few seconds, he made a choice, loosen his balloon。。。。。。

He learned to play the harmonica on this day, melodious sound echoed through the park。

Sometimes, the appropriate discard is to grasp the more meaningful things。
