mark twain delivered this speech on june 9, 1909, at the graduation ceremony of misses tewksburys school in baltimore, maryland. frances nunnally was graduating and he had promised to attend her graduation. they met on board the minneapolis during twains 1907 trip to england to receive an honorary degree from oford university and she became a member of his aquarium club. twains brief remarks at her graduation was his last public speech.
i dont know what to tell you girls to do. mr. martin has told you everything you ought to do, and now i must give you some donts.
there are three things which come to my mind which i consider ecellent advice:
first, girls, dont smoke -- that is, dont smoke to ecess. i am seventy-three and a half years old, and have been smoking seventy-three of them. but i never smoke to ecess -- that is, i smoke in moderation, only one cigar at a time.
second, dont drink -- that is, dont drink to ecess.
third, dont marry -- i mean, to ecess.
honesty is the best policy. that is an old proverb; but you dont want ever to forget it in your journey through life.

In the cartoon we can see a tall and thin man, along with a short and stout man are using suitable hotpot for dinner. Apparently, the picture aims to emphasize that anything to be done must be measured in advance so that we are able to find a proper way to do it.
This same principle applies to solving any other problem. Firstly, when we want to know the reality of something, we must describe it like it is, getting rid of our prejudices and exaggerations, so that we can have an unbiased view. Secondly, the object should be analyzed in a concrete way so that we can grasp the reasons and rules of it. Thirdly, we must adapt our approach to solving a problem, for each situation is different from the others. So we must view a problem from different perspectives.
The cartoon implies different meanings to different people. A teacher should adopt different teaching methods according to the students in the class; a doctor should prescribe different treatments according to the patient’s symptoms; a farmer should seed different plants according to the various conditions of the earth. From a philosophical point of view, dissimilar problems should be approached differently. Good results come from attentive analysis of a problem.

后來我又發(fā)現(xiàn)女兒在拿著課本讀的時候，讀得很流利，可以說是瑯瑯上口，有的幾乎都會背了。無意間我在搞紙上寫了她學(xué)過的其中一個單詞，問她是什么？怎么讀？她定靜看了一下后，默不做聲了，搖搖頭。于是我又讓她拿出課本，找出這個單詞，她就很熟練得說了出來，這樣光會說，不認(rèn)識可不行��？將來考試怎么辦？本來很自信的她，如果這樣是考不出來好成績的呀？于是我打電話咨詢朋友、老師，都說得讓孩子記單詞的拼寫、字義，不過不能急于求成，慢慢來，每天就記一、兩個單詞，孩子既感興趣，也不厭煩。我試過，方法很好，很奏效，大家也不妨試一試，看看怎么樣？
