friendship with oneself is all important, because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world.- eleanor roosevelt
we often focus on building relationships with others that we forget the essential first step: being friends of ourselves. that is the crucial first step if we are to have good relationships with others. how can we have good relationships with others if we don't even have good relationship with ourselves?
the problem might be worse than we expect. maybe we don't like ourselves without realizing it. here is a simple checklist; is there anything you don't like about yourself from these list?
your past
maybe you have made mistakes in the past which you feel bad about. you might be disappointed with yourself on why you could make such mistakes. even if that happened in distant past, your subconscious mind still has a reason not to like yourself.
your background
you might wish that you were born in different family, or that you have different background. maybe you could not accept the fact that you are not as lucky as others, who seem to get whatever they want effortlessly because of their background.
your personality traits
you might have some personality traits that you don't like. for example, you may be an introvert and you don't like it; you wish you are an extrovert.
your achievements relative to others others might have better achievements than you, and no matter how hard you tried, it might seem impossible for you to match them. you might then think that it's because you are not smart enough or don't have enough talents. is there anything that resonate with you? all these give reasons to you not to like yourself. that in turn makes it difficult for you to be a good friend to yourself.
fortunately, there are always things you can do to fix the situation. here are some tips:
1. forgive yourself
you may have made those mistakes in the past, but is there anything you can do about them? i don't think so, except learning from them. it's true that you are not perfect, but neither is everybody else. it’s normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness.
2. accept things you can't change
there are some things you cannot change, such as your background and your past. so learn to accept them. you will feel much relieved if you treat things you can’t change the way they deserve: just accept them, smile, and move on.
3. focus on your strengths
instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. you always have some strengths which give you a unique combination nobody else have. recognize your strengths and build your life around them.

4. write your success stories
one reason we may not like ourselves is we are too focused on what we don’t have that we forget about what we have. so make a list of your achievements; write your success stories. they do not have to be big things; there are a lot of small but important achievements in our life. for example, if you have some good friends, that’s already an achievement. if you have a good family, that is also an achievement.
5. stop comparing yourself with others
you are unique. you can never be like other people, and neither can other people be like you. the way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. you have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so it's useless to compare yourself with others.
6. always be true to yourself
you don't like other people lying to you, right? similarly, you won't like yourself if you know that you lie to yourself. whether you realize it or not, that gives your mind a reason not to like yourself. that’s why it's important to always be true to yourself. in whatever you do, be honest and follow your conscience. remember this quote by abraham lincoln:
i desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end . . . i have lost every other friend on earth, i shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside of me.

Respecting Our Parents
Dear editor,
Nowadays, there exists an increasingly severe phenomenon that teenagers dont show respect to their parents. As we can read in newspaper or watch in TV, some teenagers quarrel with parents, some talk back and some even resort to violence. As to this problem, Id like to advance several proposals as follows.
Initially, we should realize that its our parents who give us lives. Without parents, we can not live in this world. Therefore, the importance of respecting our parents can not be overemphasized. Whats more, it goes without saying that we have to remember the birth day of our parents, when we can express our gratitude to them. None the less, respecting our parents should be done from every detail. Just as a proverb goes, piety is above all.
To sum up, respecting parents is our traditional virtue in China. No matter how old we are, its a priority to respect our parents.

As is shown in the picture above, two men react in completely opposite ways when faced with the same event: A bottle fell off on the ground, and the wine inside spilt out. One is smiling, feeling glad that he still has the rest half of the wine while the other is sighing in great desperation saying that “everything screwed up!” The cartoon tells us that being optimistic and being pessimistic are two different attitudes towards life. Faced with a challenge, a pessimistic person may feel gloomy and distressed. He considers himself powerless, and complains about it all day long, refusing even to have a try before giving it up in the end. An optimistic person, however, may adopt an entirely different approach. He may not regard the challenge as something that bad; instead, he takes it as an excellent opportunity to display his abilities and talent. As an old saying goes, “The way you perceive the world will determine your way to cope with it.” In my point of view, though it is natural that we encounter challenges of one kind or another in our life, we should be optimistic whenever we are confronted with challenges. If we are pessimistic, we are destined to fail, ending up accomplishing nothing. But if we approach the challenges in an optimistic way, we may go from victory to victory.

In 20xx, there was a reform in the system of College English Test, which meant college students would get their test marks and there would be no limit to the times they may attend the tests before they graduate. They can attend several times before graduation until getting the scores they expect. From my point of view, it's not necessary at all.
To begin with, CET only proves one's qualification, and it's only a measurement of students'knowledge of basic knowledge. It can not necessarily tell everythingof one's English ability. Passing the tests can not prove that one can use English skillfully. It's the use of English that can tell one's English ability. Moreover, students should spend more time in their major courses, rather than in getting higher scores in CET. Preparing for CET is a huge job that costs a lot of time. College students should focus on improving their major skills and comprehensive skills. English is just used as a tool in communication, but the modern society needs those people who grasp perse skills. The companies and enterprises will take the candidate's ability on major courses into consideration rather than only the CET scores.
From the discussions above, we can conclude that the score of CET-4 and CET-6 can't prove one's all-round ability as much as previously thought. Therefore, college students needn't to attend CET-4 or CET-6 repeatedly, and what they should do is try their best to improve their major courses and comprehensive skills.
Should Food Be Banned on the Subway?
Currently, some cities are considering a food ban on subways, which has sparked heated discussion. Some people say food should be banned because of the trash and rats they attract. And, garbage from discarded food can cause track fires. Beyond sanitary and mechanical concerns, food can also cause fights, as was discovered last week by one passenger who criticized a woman eating steamed stuffed bun on the subway.
However, some others are opposed to the idea. They argue that people like eating in the train in the morning because they dont have enough time to eat at their houses or restaurants. Sometimes that may be the only time or meal a transit rider may be able to eat especially when traveling long distances. Besides, there are people, for example diabetics, who do require food at various times to maintain blood-sugar levels.
Personally, Im against the ban because of the huge inconvenience it would cause to commuters, and the expense involved in enforcing it. Still, I believe we should have a little common courtesy. I think we all have responsibility to try to treat our subway system and fellow riders with respect, and that extends to food as well.
